1469-1474 : Portuguese sailors Lopez Gonsalves and
Fernando Poo explore Biaffra Bay.
1471 : Portuguese discover
Annobon.
1472 : Discovery of Fernando Poo island, current Bioko
island.
1641 : Deutch have Fernando Poo island under their
control.
1740 : Portuguese take over Fernando Poo island under
control.
1777 : San Idelfonso Treaty between Spain and Portugal.
1778 : Pardo Treaty. Spain has rights over Annobon,
Fernando Poo island and the coastline of Guinea gulf.
1856 : A catholic mission is founded.
1858 : First organic act for Spanish Guinea issued by the
minister of Spanish overseas.
1866 : Coffee and cocoa trees are brought over into
Fernando Poo island.
1886 : Spain claims lands situated between Guinea gulf an
Oubangui.
1900 : June 27th, Paris Treaty is signed after several
months of negotiations between Spain and France. That Treaty settles borders of Spanish
Guinea.
1903 : Patronage the Indigents is set up in order to
promote « morals and culture » as well as their adherence to Spain.
1959 : Fernando Poo island and Rio Muni are declared
Spanish provinces.
1964 : Municipal elections. Each province has a civil
Governor.
1968 : August 11th, the people passes The Constitution.
September, the presidential and general elections. Macias NGUEMA, announces the first
Government of Independence. October 12th, Independence is granted.
1973 : New Constitution.
1979 : A military coup overthrows Macias NGUEMA. Theodora
OBIANG NGUEMA takes the oath during the eleventh anniversary of Independence. He grants
amnesty to political refugees.
1982 : Referendum about the Constitution.
1983 : Equatorial Guinea becomes a CAEC and CASCU member.
1985 : Equatorial Guinea becomes a Franc-zone member.
1989 : Re-election of President Theodoro OBIANG NGUEMA
MBASOGO.
1991 : Universal suffrage is introduced.
1993 : Conclusion of a national multi-party pact.
1994 : Structural Adjustment Program is concluded with
IMF.
1996: Re-election of President Theodoro OBIANG NGUEMA
MBASOGO with 97% of votes.
1998 : New National Assembly (80 seats).
1999 : Legislative election (March 7th ). The governing
Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea (PDGE) retains control of the National Assembly(75
seats). Two opposition parties- Convergence for Social Democracy (CPDS) and Popular Union
(PU)- have seats in Parliament. June 23rd, Central African Economic and Monetary Community
(CAEMC) summit.
